Flanges and Pouches
A properly fitted pouch is essential to minimize stomal and
skin irritation and obtain optimum pouch wear time.
A stoma measuring card allows correct measurement of the stoma.
Measure the stoma accurately!
Select the smallest opening which fits comfortably around the stoma
without actually touching it
( it is suggest 1/8" clearencearound the stoma for best results in most
situations)
Too large an opening will leave skin exposed and could lead to
skin irration or erosion.
What are Wafers? (faceplate, barrier, flange) Used in
conjunction with a pouch, they are fitted over and around the stoma to collect
the diverted output, either stool or urine. The barrier is designed to protect
the skin from the stoma output and to be as neutral to the skin as possible.
What is Convex? For people with ostimates who have a flush or
retracted stoma which requires a 'gentle push' outward to facilitate better
drainage into the pouch.
Hollister Convex Barrier Rings are designed to fit into the
flange/ring adding convexity to the standard skin barrier/wafer for improved
management of retracted stomas. May be used with just about any type of
flange, can be added to a convex to add deeper convex if need as convex
flanges have different depth in convexity.
Hollister Skin Barriers
Hollister SoftFlex Skin Barrier is a synthetic skin
barrier,which provides gentle adhesive attachment to the skin. It's design to
limit skin damage with frequent removal and can be changed daily ,or
more often softflex is more flexible than the flexwear
Hollister Standard Wear Skin Barries, provides
a gentle adhesive attachment to the skin. these barries absorb less and
disintegrate faster than extendened wear skin barries Example Flex wear and
Softflex
Hollister FlexwearSkin Barrier,
is a synthetic skin barrier,which is designed to be worn more than one day.
Flex Wear barrier is more resistant to breakdown than SoftFlex skin barriers.
Hollister Flextend Skin Barrier, No skin
gels or skin prep should be used with this. It is made for acidic
discharge and is longer wearing than the flexwear or softflex.
It is comparable to Durahesive.
FLEXTEND barrier is more resistant to discharge. Longer wear time
in most cases.
Hollister suggests Do not use Skin
gel wipes or other brands of skin preps with Flextend skin barriers
Hollister Extended Wear Skin Barries,
Skin barries with special additives that achieve a
stronger adhesive seal and are more resistant to break down.
Skin barrier of choice for UROSTOMIES &
ILEOSTOMIES Flextend is an example.It is not recommended to use
skin-prepping agents under extended wear barries. What are Closed End Pouches?
They are designed for one-time usage, which makes them ideal for
everyday use, special occasions or for intimate moments. Eliminates the need
to manipulate a tail closure and emptying a pouch. Designed with a filter to
reduce odor and gas buildup.
What are Open End Pouches? This type of pouch requires a closing
device usually called a clamp or tail clip. Open-ended pouches are called
drainable and are left attached to the body while emptying. What are two-piece
wafer and pouch sets? Pouches can be removed or interchanged with other pouch
types without removal of the skin barrier/wafer.
What are Two Piece Systems? They consist of a flange and pouch.
The pouch contains a closing ring which mechanically attaches to a mating
piece on the flange. The most common closure is a pressure fit snap ring.
What is a One Piece System? The wafer and pouch are assembled
together in one piece and not separate.
What is a Pouch Filter? Charcoal-activated deodorizing filter.(
Lets gas escape from your pouch un noticed)
What is an Ostomy Belt? An ostomy belt wraps around the abdomen
and attaches to the loops found on certain pouches. Belts can also be used to
help support the pouch or as an alternative to adhesives if skin problems
develop. These usually add a measure of security.
What are Tail Closures? A clamp used with drainable pouches.
What is a Clipless Tail Closure? It is made with Velcro. (No need
for a plastic clamp)
What is an Irrigation System? Some people with colostomies can
“irrigate,” using a procedure similar to an enema. This is done to clean stool
directly out of the colon through the stoma. This requires a special
irrigation system, consisting of an irrigation bag with a connecting tube (or
catheter), a stoma cone and an irrigation sleeve. A special lubricant is
sometimes used on the stoma in preparation for irrigation. Following
irrigation, some colostomates can use a stoma cap, a one- or two-piece system
which simply covers and protects the stoma. This procedure is usually done to
avoid the need to

What are Barrier Strips?
Adopt Barrier Strips can be used to improve the performance of
your skin barrier as they can be molded and shaped to create any custom shape.
- You can shape the strips to create oval convexity. - The skin barrier strips
can be adjusted to create deeper convexity.
What is a Barrier Ring?
Barrier Rings are shaped to provide additional convexity. The thinness
and flexibility of the rings allows them to be molded to the shape of the
stoma. They fill in depressions and even out skin contours under a skin
barrier.

What are Adhesive Removers?
Adhesive Remover
For the removal of adhesive devices, residue softens adhesive
minimizing trauma caused by adhesive removal.
Adhesive Remover, Wipe is a pad saturated with a unique

barrier, and adhesive residues from the skin that can reduce wear times, and
it contains emollients that leave the skin feeling soft and supply.
What are Skin BarrierWipes?
Protective Barrier (comes in wipes & spray alcohol base, on
alcohol base & non-sting) comes in a non-water protective barrier
that resist breakdown and breathes for greater comfort. It leaves a thin,
comfortable film, which protects against skin stripping, tension blisters, and
adhesive residue.

What is Paste?
Paste forms a seal around the opening of the wafer to prevent
fluid leakage.
Paste is a highly effective filler, sealant and protective skin
barrier for use around colostomy, ileostomy and urinary stomas.
The paste is also used to protect exposed skin around fistula sites,
between the base of the stoma and the opening in the appliance and as filler
for skin folds, uneven skin surfaces and scars.

Karaya Paste Karaya is a natural skin barrier that is
particularly well suited for skin problems or for sensitive skin where
